The Community Alert Group was formed in 1994 in response to a need in the Parish. The Garda Siochana gave a talk to us on security, especially for the elderly. Security Locks were fitted on doors and windows, also smoke alarms. Following government grants, it was possible to provide all the elderly people living alone with security pendants. This has been a wonderful success, and has offered great peace of mind to all. Great credit is due to Dave Fouhy and the late Tim Tomlins RIP who did such wonderful work in fitting them
It was realised that there were many other needs in the Community so our Group became "Community Care / Alert Group". It was possible to get funding from the Southern Health Board for bedding, new doors and windows etc. Bathrooms were installed where needed. Some people avail of meals on wheels, and a rota was set up to carry out this service.
There are many social events
throughout the year, such as three-day trips to many parts of the country, visits
to other parishes for social evenings, as well as hosting some at home. Visitation
of the elderly takes place in their homes and in hospitals.
"Open House" Castlelyons style! began last year, this event takes
place in the Community Hall on Monday afternoons and consists of; Exercises
- by a trained instructor, Dance, Teas and cakes and bingo. This monthly event

A limited number of smoke alarms are now available to Senior Citizens and can now be fitted in your homes. Contact Dave on 36160
If you are interested in joining in the fun come along to the Community Centre Castlelyons on Monday afternoons for Bingo, Bowls, Dancing, Gentle Exercise and lots more. Refreshments served. All welcome.
Pendant alarms are a must for people living alone in case of a fall or illness. They are worn around the neck or wrist and the button can be pressed if help is needed. It will have a family member or neighbours phone number programmed in it and they will be contacted automatically once the button is pressed. Please contact Dave on 36160 for more information.
There are seventy radios distributed around the parish. These are of great benefit and consolation to all who have availed of them. We are about to order some more – anyone interested please contact Maureen at 36246.
